The Story of Half Sumo
Half Sumo Collective is an independent brand of martial arts apparel and accessories born in New York from the passion of two martial artists: Luigi Scarcella Perino and Alberto Marchetti, respectively a three-time USA Kyokushin Karate champion and a Jiu Jitsu black belt with experience in international tournaments.
The project started at the end of 2018 with a first limited-edition kimono (Bushi Dogi Unbleached, only 100 pieces). Since then, the brand has focused on limited-run capsule collections, with each collection designed as a concept and a story to be collected.
Today, Half Sumo continues to grow with creativity, determination, and new collaborations, reflecting the values of budo (the martial way): passion, discipline, and continuous improvement—not only in training, but in life and everyday challenges.
Half Sumo
Half Sumo is an independent brand that speaks directly to the heart of those who live Jiu Jitsu, MMA, and Wrestling as a true way of life. Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Brooklyn, Half Sumo is a New York–born brand with a strong, unmistakable identity, forged, founded, and nurtured in New York. The brand is born from the meeting of urban culture and the martial way (Budo), combining technical performance with artistic design. Behind the project are Italian designer Luigi Scarcella Perino and Alberto Marchetti, both long-time martial arts practitioners. Luigi is a three-time USA Kyokushin Karate full-contact champion and represented the United States at the Tokyo World Championships in 2019 and 2023. Alberto is a Jiu Jitsu black belt under Renzo Gracie and has competed in numerous international tournaments. Half Sumo garments stand out for their hand-drawn Irezumi-style graphics, powerful, symbolic, and rich in meaning. Each collection tells a story of discipline, honor, and transformation—values deeply rooted in martial culture. This vision takes shape in limited-edition collections, true capsule drops designed not only to be worn, but also lived and collected.
