Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: cos’è e che attrezzatura serve per praticarlo

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: what it is and what equipment is needed to practice it

The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (often abbreviated BJJ or Brazilian JJ) is a martial art and fighting style of Brazilian origin, which in recent years has spread throughout the world, including Italy.

Its peculiarity is to favor the ground fighting, rather than standing, and techniques such as landings, joint levers and strangulation to striking techniques (kicks, punches, knees) typical of traditional combat sports such as boxing and kick boxing.

It is a discipline in which technique is worth more than strength: bringing the opponent to the ground reduces gaps due to weight, height, and power of strikes. This is why brazilian jiu jitsu is highly valued as a self-defense system, especially by women.

What equipment is needed to practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

BJJ Gi: is the uniform of those who practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it consists of jacket and Trousers. It is mandatory to wear it in official competitions. In the gym it is not always required, but it becomes indispensable when one wants to train techniques that involve grabbing the opponent by the lapel of the jacket.

BJJ Belt: distinguishes the athlete by his experience and training, and is essential to make sure the Gi stays tight to the body.

Rashguard: is a very tight-fitting technical shirt that can be worn under the Gi. Its function is to place a barrier between the skin and the fabric of the Gi. In official competitions, it is not allowed to wear the rashguard, but in training it is absolutely recommended, both to better preserve the Gi and for hygienic reasons.

Compression Shorts: they facilitate muscle warm-up and retain sweat. They are so tight that you will hardly notice them under the Gi, and your training partners will thank you ;-)

Groin guard protective: essential for protecting your private parts. Although brazilian JJ does not involve striking, in the phases of fighting every part of the body can go through trauma, so it is good to protect it.

Taping patch: In wrestling, the fingers are highly stressed and are often traumatized. The patch helps to prevent injuries, and allow them to fight even if the fingers have minor injuries.
